Take a look at our “Types of Roof Windows” guide.
Here we describe in detail the various differences between roof windows. FAKRO manufactures a range of roof windows that transform attics into comfortable living spaces.
What’s the difference between a roof window and a skylight?
The main difference between a roof window and a skylight is that a roof window opens like a regular window on side hinges or pivoting at the center or top. Roof windows operate manually with the turn of a handle and are also available in electrical versions.

Pivot windows

A basic type of roof window. They ensure a flow of fresh air and allow light into the room. These windows open only in a centre pivot method and can be rotated through 180 degrees and this function is used when cleaning the outer pane or operating the awning blind. Centre pivot windows can be equipped with both external and internal accessories. These Types of Roof Windows are becoming very popular with homeowners
Windows With Raised Axis of Rotation

The axis of rotation is situated above the centre of the window, so even a tall person can easily walk up to the window edge. Window ensures a very good illumination and provides a wide view to the outside. The lower part of the sash fulfils a top hung window function and the upper part of the sash is an additional source of daylight. The only window on the market when installed in roofs with pitches 39º- 43º satisfies the requirements of DIN 5034-1 standard, according to which the bottom window edge has to be situated 95 cm above the floor level and the top minimum 220 cm. Window with raised axis of rotation opens in centre pivot method and can be locked for cleaning at 160 degrees. Window can be equipped with internal and external accessories.
Raised Axis of Rotation With Lower Transom

There are two sashes placed in one frame of FDY-V window. The upper sash is opened like a pivot window but its axis of rotation is situated above the centre of the window. The lower sash is non-opening with external pane laminated. This window structure eliminates the need for vertical combinations, hence offering a very good illumination, ventilation and a very wide view to the outside. The only window on the market that when installed in roofs with pitches 30º-43º satisfies the requirements of DIN 5034-1 standard, which states that bottom window edge has to be situated 95 cm above the floor level and the top minimum 220 cm. The upper sash is opened in centre pivot function and is locked for cleaning at 160 degrees. The window can be equipped with internal and external accessories.
Top Hung and Pivot Windows

Pivot and Top Hung Windows allow light and fresh air into the room, ensure unobstructed access to the window and a wide view to the outside through the open window. They can be opened in two ways:
- the outward opening function from 0 to 35 degrees enables an easy approach to the window and a wide view
- the centre pivot function is used for cleaning and also operating the awning blind
- Top hung windows can be equipped with external and internal accessories
Side Hung Egress Window FWU

The side hung window enables safe and easy access to the roof and also acts as an escape window. A mechanism fitted in the top part of the window makes opening easier, holds the sash stable when opened and prevents it slamming shut accidentally. It increases the amount of light and allows fresh air into the room. The escape window is available in two versions, right opening (FWR) or left opening (FWL); the sash can be opened to 90 degrees. Side hung escape windows can be equipped with internal accessories the same as other roof windows.
Balcony window

An innovative, large window whose sashes when opened create a balcony. The upper sash opens steplessly upwards up to 45°, The lower sash can be tilted forward. In order to close it the locks located by the rails of the frame have to realesed.
Side safety barriers are integrated into the bottom sash and slide out during opening. When closing the the lower sash, balcony rails hide inside the window and are not visible above the roof surface. The window is operated by the handle located at the bottom of the upper sash.
The window features a multi-point locking system, without a traditional locking assembly. After turning the handle, the sash is locked at two sides
of the frame.
